The Mollar Elche variety of pomegranate has 10 times more antioxidant capacity in its skin than in its edible interior

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

The project “Granatum Europa”, in collaboration with Miguel Hernández University, promotes the consumption of the pomegranate and derived products which triple the antioxidant power of green tea or red wine.
For the first time, products made from Mollar Elche pomegranates cultivated in Spain will be made available to Spanish consumers.
The pomegranate is a great source of vitamin C and E and potassium, as well as containing the polyphenols responsible for its high level of antioxidant activity.
At 40,000 tonnes a year, 95% of the production of pomegranates in the European Union is concentrated in Alicante.

Madrid SPAIN, 23nd of June 2010. The study, carried out by the Food Quality and Safety  Group of Miguel Hernández University, Elche (UMH), in collaboration with the laboratories Antioxidantes Naturales del Mediterráneo in Murcia, a member of the “Granatum Europa” project, has shown that the pomegranate’s greatest antioxidant capacity is in its skin and not in its edible centre as believed up to now.

The pomegranate is a great source of vitamin C and E and minerals like potassium, as well as containing the polyphenols responsible for its high level of antioxidant activity, the main component of which are punicalagins. The antioxidant power of the pomegranate is almost three times greater than that of green tea or red wine.

“Granatum Plus” capsules, made exclusively from Mollar Elche pomegranates grown in Spain, contain around 30% punicalagins with 50% polyphenols and around 80% pomegranate extract.

According to Professor Ángel Carbonell of UMH who has led this research “Taking one “Granatum Plus” capsule would equate to drinking 100 ml of juice squeezed from fruit of this variety. This research, along with other research carried out in recent years by prestigious universities around the world, has come to show that the antioxidant capacity of the pomegranate’s skin is 10 times higher than that of its edible interior.”

The project Granatum Europa, formed by Spanish and European food technology companies and Miguel Hernández University, combines both research and development.

Miguel Hernández University (Food Technology Department, Food Quality and Safety Group) directed by Professor Ángel Carbonell and other prestigious scientists from Spanish and European universities. All of the prime materials used come from farming cooperatives in the Alicante province which, with a volume of 40,000 tonnes a year, make up 95% of the pomegranates cultivated in the European Union.

According to Dr. Ruiz de la Roja, urologist and director of the Madrid Urological Institute, “the antioxidant polyphenols contained in the pomegranate’s skin and fruit, such as ellagic acid, have not only proven to interfere with the development of prostate cancer, but it has also been shown that their effect goes beyond that, increasing the production of nitric oxide in the blood vessels, improving the circulation of the blood on all levels, meaning that heart and sexual functions are improved.”

The pomegranate, which originates from the Middle East, is produced in many other countries, particularly Mediterranean countries, Spain being the top producer of pomegranates in Europe, and their production is almost exclusive to the Valencia region, especially Elche and the surrounding area.

For Eduardo Vidal, project manager, “this research implies significant progress as the extract taken from the skin of the Granatum Plus pomegranate is soluble and will serve to enrich the products that we are working on such as juices, nectars, jams, syrups and capsules, all from pomegranates cultivated in Spain.”

Although pomegranates and derived products are widely consumed and accepted by a proportion of European consumers, 99% of the products available in our country are made from pomegranates originating from outside of the borders of the European Union. The Granatum Plus product line will be the first to go on the market which is made from pomegranates cultivated in Spain.

Professor of Medicine and Public Health of the Centre for Human Nutrition of the University of California, David Heber, in the prologue to the book “Pomegranates: Ancient Roots to Modern Medicine” assures that “The biochemistry of the pomegranate is fascinating, and the classes of components that it contains are highly varied. The reddish purple colour of the anthocyanins gives the skin its intense colour. Anthocyanins are also found in the arils (the term for the scientific part of widely consumed plants, including their flesh and seeds), together with remains of a family of astringent compounds known as hydrolysable tannins. The pomegranate juice, which is made from the fruit as a whole, is a rich source of polyphenol antioxydants and an ellagitannin known as punicalagin.”

The Pomegranates in Bible and Quran

Monday, May 9th, 2011

The Pomegranates are mentioned in the Bible 25 times and in the Quran three times, i.e., the Bible cites the Pomegranates eight times more than the Quran does.

Furthermore, the total words of the Bible are 788,280 while the total words of the Quran are 77,473. It follows that, the Bible has the likely of more than 10 times than the Quran word-wise to talk about the Pomegranates. In addition, the Bible has the prospective of more than 35 times than the Quran topic-wise to utter about the Pomegranates.

The Pomegranates in the Bible:

Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon; your mouth is lovely, Your temples behind your veil are like the halves of a pomegranate; I would give you spiced wine to drink, the nectar of my pomegranates; there I will give you my love:

Song of Solomon 4:3

Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon; your mouth is lovely. Your temples behind your veil are like the halves of a pomegranate.

Song of Solomon 4:13

Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates with choice fruits, with henna and nard,

Song of Solomon 6:7

Your temples behind your veil are like the halves of a pomegranate.

Song of Solomon 6:11

[Lover] I went down to the grove of nut trees to look at the new growth in the valley, to see if the vines had budded or the pomegranates were in bloom.

Song of Solomon 7:12

Let us go early to the vineyards to see if the vines have budded, if their blossoms have opened, and if the pomegranates are in bloom— there I will give you my love.

Song of Solomon 8:2

I would lead you and bring you to my mother’s house— she who has taught me. I would give you spiced wine to drink, the nectar of my pomegranates.

The LORD commanded Moses to use pomegranates for decoration purposes. Then, it seems that it was a habit to use pomegranates for decoration. You may locate 13 verses out of the 25 are talking about the use pomegranates for decoration:

Exodus 28:33

Make pomegranates of blue, purple and scarlet yarn around the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them.

Exodus 28:34

The gold bells and the pomegranates are to alternate around the hem of the robe.

Exodus 39:24

They made pomegranates of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen around the hem of the robe.

Exodus 39:25

And they made bells of pure gold and attached them around the hem between the pomegranates.

Exodus 39:26

The bells and pomegranates alternated around the hem of the robe to be worn for ministering, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Then, it seems that it was a habit to use pomegranates for decoration

1Kings 7:18

He made pomegranates in two rows encircling each network to decorate the capitals on top of the pillars. He did the same for each capital.

1 Kings 7:20

On the capitals of both pillars, above the bowl-shaped part next to the network, were the two hundred pomegranates in rows all around.

1 Kings 7:42

The four hundred pomegranates for the two sets of network (two rows of pomegranates for each network, decorating the bowl-shaped capitals on top of the pillars

2 Kings 25:17

Each pillar was twenty-seven feet high. The bronze capital on top of one pillar was four and a half feet high and was decorated with a network and pomegranates of bronze all around. The other pillar, with its network, was similar.

2 Chronicles 3:16

He made interwoven chains and put them on top of the pillars. He also made a hundred pomegranates and attached them to the chains.

2Chronicles 4:13

The four hundred pomegranates for the two sets of network (two rows of pomegranates for each network, decorating the bowl-shaped capitals on top of the pillars.

Jeremiah 52:22

The bronze capital on top of the one pillar was five cubits high and was decorated with a network and pomegranates of bronze all around. The other pillar, with its pomegranates, was similar.

Jeremiah 52:23

There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides; the total number of pomegranates above the surrounding network was a hundred.

A pomegranate tree was used to determine the borders of cities:

1 Samuel 14:2

Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men,

Numbers 13:23

When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs.

Deuteronomy 8:8

A land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;

Protest against Moses:

Numbers 20:5

Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!”

The pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit, From this day on I will bless you:

Haggai 2:19

Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. “‘From this day on I will bless you.’ “

The joy of mankind is withered away.

Joel 1:12

The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree— all the trees of the field—are dried up. Surely the joy of mankind is withered away.

The Pomegranates in the Quran:

Surah 6:99

It is He Who sendeth down rain from the skies; with it We produce vegetation of all kinds: from some We produce green (crops), out of which We produce grain, heaped up (at harvest); out of the date palm and its sheaths (or spathes) (come) clusters of dates hanging low and near: and (then there are) gardens of grapes, and olives, and pomegranates, each similar (in kind) yet different (in variety, flavor and taste): when they begin to bear fruit, feast your eyes with the fruit and the ripeness thereof. Behold! In these things there are Signs for people who believe.

This verse emphasizes the importance of the rain for production of the different kinds of plants. The verse considers these biological processes as signs from Allah for the people who believe.

Surah 6:141

It is He Who produceth gardens, with trellises and without, and dates, and tilth with produce of all kinds, and olives and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in variety, flavor and taste): eat of their fruit in their season, but render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered. But waste not by excess: for Allah loveth not the wasters (the prodigals, the extravagant).

This verse gives two meanings that are not found in the Bible:

One should render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered

Allah does not love the prodigals

Surah 55:68

Wherein is fruit, the date-palm and pomegranate.

The verse talks about the paradise(heaven), wherein there is fruit, Palm trees and pomegranate. This is another implication that is not found in the Bible.

Here again, you may notice that the Quran is interested in the afterlife while the Bible does not.

Back to the issue; this is my question to you smart readers:

Is the Quran quoted from the Bible?

Wine Making Kits – Simple Ideas to Making Perfect Wine at Home

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

If you fond of wine you can also enjoy taking a stab at making your own wine, in your home. It can be a lot of fun. There are wine making kits available that take you step by step through the entire process. Here is what you will need to know about wine production kits to be successful.

Wine making kits are available for personal value so that anyone can become a winemaker at home. The process is fairly simple and if you take your time you can soon start creating your own signature blend of wine to enjoy and offer to guests.

As you begin shopping you will find that wine making kits come in a variety of sizes and contain everything you will need to create your bottles. There are unusual kits available depending on how many bottles you’d like to produce.

Here is a tip: always allow for the possibility of some bottles to spoil. So if you have an occasion in mind that you would like to give the wine for, make more than you will require, just in case. You can always drink the wine later.

One thing to save in mind is that you are not limited to grapes when making your own wine. You can fundamentally use any type of fruit or fruit juice concentrate, it is just that grapes are traditionally easier to use as they are well balanced and tend to do the best in the wine making process.

It can be a lot of work to get the required concentrate, but pomegranate wine can be great!

In some areas, permit is required to make alcohol in your home. It is always worth checking this out before you commence, so that you do not waste cash on kits you cannot use or accidentally break the law.

Once you have your wine making kit, the operation is fairly easy but time intensive especially when you are first beginning out. If you can, access grapes that is the same as your favorite wine – these are specifically grown for wine making and will have the best results. By choosing your favorite you will be sure to like the taste and have something to compare your wine to when it’s done.

First you will need to pull out any ruined fruit and then check the sugar level in the grapes you are using. From here you only have to wash them and then start the process of drawing the liquid from them. If you are uncertain about this level then you can always substitute a fruit juice rather until you settle that you are make to move to the next level.

There are a few different methods to get your flavor from the grapes and you need to choose the one best for your variety of grape and abilities. From there you begin the fermenting process. This is basically the rotting of the fruit, for lack of a better word. But it is also what makes the fruit become alcoholic.

Once you are prepare to let your wine sit, anticipate it to be there for a number of weeks. Mostly more than three weeks and less than sixty days is the ideal time to bottle your wine. It will also usually require being stored in a dry, dark, cool area.

After bottling you can decide on the aging you wish to impart in your wine. This may depend on the variety of wine you have made and the required taste of the finished product.

Wine making kits will aid this process along and give you step by step instructions as well as contain all the equipment that you’ll need to make a successful product.
