In short, sprouts are a great, inexpensive source of essential enzymes, minerals and vitamins. They also contain all the nutrients that are usually found in fruits and vegetables. In fact, eating sprouted pulses is the safest way to get the nutritional advantage without the risk of ingesting harmful pesticides and insecticides that are generally found on fruits and vegetables.
The pomegranate is the fruit of a warm climate shrub or small tree which has been cultivated in Asia and around the Mediterranean sea for centuries. It is now grown in many countries around the world where the climate allows. It is a fruit which is fairly difficult and fiddly to peel and eat, with the juicy red ‘arils’ or seed cases needing to be separated from the pith by hand. It is usually eaten raw.
Pomegranate is the fruit of a shrub that grows primarily in warn climate regions and has been cultivated in parts of Mediterranean and Asia for a long time now, although it’s cultivated in virtually every part of the world where the climate allows. The fruit is characterized by its rather tough exterior peel which encloses a large number of seeds. Folk Mythology indicates that the fruit has 365 seeds although observation suggests that the total number of seeds can vary from 329 to 1000
The presence of polyphenols (antioxidant) in the fruit makes the fruit good for health because polyphenols remove the free radicals from the cells and helps the human cell to maintain its function. Polyphenols have an anti inflammatory property that helps in strengthening the immune system and wound repair. Polyphenols also helps to reduce skin wrinkling and so makes the pomegranate famous ingredient in traditonal and modern anti aging remedies.
For this work, the researchers examined the impact of 10 ellagitannin-derived compounds from pomegranates on hormone activity and breast cancer cell growth. The results showed that of the ten compounds, urolithins B most significantly inhibited the growth of the breast cancer cells in the laboratory testing.
Pomegranates are well known for their numerous health benefits. They are very rich in antioxidants and are often used in desserts, preserves, juices, and other beverages. We’ve found pomegranates are an ideal mid morning or afternoon snack, as they are low in calories and serve as a natural energy booster. But perhaps just as importantly, pomegranates taste great! They are rich and juicy at maturity, with a citrus flavor offering a touch of apple, grapefruit, and plum. The seeds are edible and are a primary source of various vitamins and beneficial minerals. As you would imagine, the fruit itself is extremely rich in vitamin C.
While you can certainly enjoy eating the fruit pods one at a time, combining the pomegranate with other fruits creates fruit smoothies that have a refreshingly tart taste and are perfect for an afternoon pickup or even as a desert! Try one of these smoothie recipes-made with fresh pomegranate seeds or some quick easy smoothies that are made with pomegranate juice! Filling and delicious!
